Two Grub St. Summer classes given in Cohasset

Two Grub St. Summer classes given in Cohasset

Jumpstart Your Writing, Section B
6 Tuesdays, 6:30-9:30pm at Buttonwood Books in Cohasset. Begins June 28th.

This course has a very clear mission: devote three hours of your week to writing. Through a series of fun directed writing exercises, we will explore the terrain of fiction and non-fiction: mining for material, constructing characters and settings, shaping vivid dialogue, understanding point of view, and finding your voice. We will discuss the process of writing and the strengths and weaknesses of the work we produce in class. We may read and discuss some short published texts in regards to craft, then write exercises inspired by the texts. A supportive and generative experience for both new and practicing writers.

Reading Like a Writer, Section B
6 Wednesdays, 6:30pm-9:30pm at Buttonwood Books in Cohasset. Begins June 29th.

To become better writers, we must not only read great books, but read them more actively. This term, get back to the reason why you wanted to write in the first place: to create fiction that lasts, that matters. For six weeks, we will read and discuss some of the best stories in contemporary and classic literature, as well as selected essays from Francine Prose’s book, Reading Like A Writer. We will also do short, weekly writing exercises designed to get us inside authors’ heads and unlock their secrets. By the end, we’ll have trained ourselves to read for craft as well as for pleasure, and you’ll see that your favorite writers aren’t magically gifted beings, to be admired and exalted — they’re your teachers.

Experience the phenomenon that is Maureen Hancock, seen on Fox network, and soon on a Disney channel.  Maureen will read excerpts from her new book, (which will be available for purchase) answer questions, and personally sign books. In addition, for some fortunate members of our audience, Maureen will offer "postcards" from the other side; messages of reassurance that our loved ones are still with us. Maureen's gift and humor will soften even the most hardened skeptics. If you’re an avid reader, aspiring writer, or just a fan of Ms Hancock, doesn’t miss this opportunity to learn first-hand from a published author.
Ms Hancock’s new memoir, The Medium Next Door: Adventures of a Real-Life Ghost Whisperer tells the story of how, at just five years old, Maureen Hancock discovered her ability to communicate with the dead. Descended from a long line of legendary Irish mystics, she was no stranger to the spiritual realm, but for fear of being misunderstood by her friends and family she kept the otherworldly messages to herself, eventually suppressing them completely. Maureen would not hear the spirits again until she was in a near-fatal car crash. Soon after, she had hundreds of voices in her head, many of which helped her crack cases and expose fraud in her role as a litigation paralegal at a large Boston law firm. Then, when tragedy struck on 9/11, Maureen was bombarded with messages from the spirit world. As each one made contact with her, she finally came to terms with her calling: to communicate with the deceased, assist the dying, search for missing children, and teach the living about life after death, all the while raising her children in her suburban home.

Maureen Hancock is literally is the Medium Next Door, and in this book and through her stories of her encounters with the otherworld as well as guided exercises at the conclusion of each chapter, she offers the same comfort and wisdom she shares in her healing encounters and lectures about what is out there waiting for all who are open to its mysteries. . . .
